CARDET welcomes you to the first newsletter for Cyprus, issued within the project Raising Awareness on Development Cooperation (RADC). This newsletter will be published every four months and will contain information related to Development Cooperation and Global Education. It will also present information about the progress of the efforts to mobilise the support of European citizens for the fight against global poverty and the MDG agenda. We encourage our readers to send their opinions and feedback in order to improve this publication. Moreover, we welcome contributions from NGOs, Institutions and individuals working in the sector. We hope this periodic publication will provide a means for cooperation with NGOs, Universities and individuals in order to engage in the Development Cooperation debate and positively affect the fight towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

![]() CARDET recently announced it has become the first Cyprus Non-Governmental Development Organization (NGDO) to lead a EuropeAid Project. 'Raising Awareness on Development Cooperation' is a EuropeAid project that aims to mobilise European citizens – especially in the New Member States – for the fight against global poverty, and to educate the people of Europe about the historical background, aims and scope of the European Union's comprehensive development cooperation policy. The Project is expected to increase collaboration among citizens, NGDOs and universities, and to inspire them to engage in the Development Cooperation debate. CARDET announces the launch of the Development Education portal. The portal was created for the purposes of the RADC EuropeAid project and it contains useful information related to Development Cooperation and Education. This portal was developed by the CARDET team, with the contribution of the project partners. The website content is provided in English but it also supports Greek and Romanian in some of its sections. We envision that this portal will become a dynamic networking medium for Sustainable Development experts, academics, students, decision makers, NGO activists, mass media professionals and the general public. The website will be regularly updated with news related to the project, the MDGs and Sustainable Development.
On May 25, with the occasion of International Day of Africa, World Vision Romania announced the official launch of the project "Raising awareness for development cooperation". Nongovernmental organizations active in the development cooperation field were present at the event, and they all underlined the problems caused by poverty on the African continent as well as the difficult situation of the African refugees in Romania. Anita Delhass, National Director World Vision Romania considers that the social problems that both Romania and the African countries are going through should bring them together.
CARDET in cooperation with the consultancy firm INNOVADE LI LTD have been granted with the project "Research with regards to the needs of asylum seekers and beneficiaries of international protection and whether those are covered by existing programs/ projects. Identification of Best Practices." The project was awarded to the consortium following an open call for proposals from the Asylum Service of the Ministry of Interior under the European Refugee Fund. The project is co-funded by the EU Solidarity Funds (75%) and the Republic of Cyprus (25%). The objective of the project is to identify the needs of asylum seekers in reception and integration processes. The research is expected the uncover the needs of asylum seekers, the effectiveness of the projects targeting them and register relevant best practices.
CARDET announces the forthcoming publication of the article "Cyprus National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Development 2011-2015: An opportunity for a "social turn" " by its team members Sotiris Themistokleous, Charalambos Vrasidas and Michalinos Zembylas. The article will be included in the Annual Report 2010 for Social Watch, which will be published in a few days. |
The International Research Center CARDET in cooperation with the consultancy firm INNOVADE LI LTD have been granted with the project "Development Of Indicators and Methods for the Evaluation of Measures of Integration" The project was awarded to the consortium following an open call for proposals from the Civil Registration and Migration Department of the Ministry of Interior under the European Integration Fund as part of the Solidarity Funds. The project is co-funded by the EU Solidarity Funds (75%) and the Republic of Cyprus (25%). The objective of the project is to develop indicators and methods for the evaluation of measures of integration.The research is expected to determine the needs of migrants (Third Country Nationals) and the effectiveness of policies, practices and projects targeting them.
The CARDET team had a strong presence at this year's AERA with participation in 10 events. The AERA conference is one of the largest education research conferences in the world, with more than 10,000 researchers attending. This year's event took place in Denver Colorado from April 30 – May 4, 2010.
CARDET in cooperation with the consultancy firm INNOVADE LI LTD have been granted the project "Research on Cypriot Students' Perceptions with Regards to Immigrants". The project was awarded to the consortium following an open call for proposals from the Civil Registry and Migration Department of the Ministry of Interior, under the European Integration Fund, as part of the Solidarity Funds. The project is co-funded by the EU Solidarity Funds (75%) and the Republic of Cyprus (25%). The objective of this research project is to investigate and explore the perceptions and attitudes of Cypriot students in primary and secondary schools with respect to immigrants (Third Country Nationals). The results of the project will be of value to the Civil Registry and Migration Department, as well as other organizations involved in migration issues.
The Seventh International Conference on Networked Learning was held in Aalborg, Denmark on May 3-4, 2010. The Networked Learning Conference is an international, research-based conference. Since its inception in 1998 the conference has developed a strong following by international researchers. In addition it is well supported by practitioners, managers and learning technologists interested in contributing to and hearing about research in this area. The conference is considered a major event in the international 'technology enhanced learning' conference circuit.
